CHAPTER 19

WHAT THEY DESCRIBED as meat loaf and proceeded to smother in gravy was being served for dinner. Elena hated this meal because it reminded her of the horrible family dinners she was forced to endure as a young girl. Scooping it off her plate and putting it on Cathy’s, Elena sat back wrestling with her thoughts. For the past few weeks, Dr. Jensen’s passes at her had become more frequent and she could tell he was getting frustrated by her refusals. It was so bad she’d started being careful not to accept any drinks from him. You just never knew the lengths someone could be willing to stoop to get what they wanted.

“I know it’s not the best, but you gotta eat,” Cathy said around a mouthful.

“Skipping a meal once a week won’t hurt me.” Stabbing at the overcooked broccoli on her plate, she realized she had no appetite. The patients talk and word had gotten to her about Dr. Jensen’s sexual appetites. The rumors were that he’d taken it upon himself to partake of the fruits of certain patients that had mysteriously disappeared not long after. He was sorely mistaken if he thought she’d be another one of his pets.

“You hear about the new guy that got admitted yesterday. I heard he’s cute, but I haven’t seen him yet.”

“Who told you that?” Elena was grateful for the distraction Cathy provided.

“Lauren. She was walking back from the garden and saw them escort him in.”

“Are you talking about the same Lauren that said she’d fucked Christian Bale on the set of Batman?”

“Yes, she’s a bit eccentric, but still.”

“I’ll withhold any judgment or excitement until I see this mystery man myself.”

“Didn’t see him at breakfast or lunch so he must be a pretty quiet, private guy. Maybe he’s disfigured in some way?”

“Then that shoots Lauren’s opinion to shit, doesn’t it?”

“True,” Cathy said, mixing the meat with her potatoes.

“He’ll have to show his face around here sometime,” Elena said, keeping an eye on the table two away from them where a certain someone had been staring hard at Cathy for the past minute or two. “Your friend is back again. Been staring for a minute now.”

“Oh God.” She dropped her fork to her plate and stopped chewing. “He’s such a creep. He tried following me into the bathroom the other day and I caught him following me on a walk outside. What’s he gonna do next? Try and sneak into my room?”

“That might be fun.”

“Not funny Elena. He really scares me.” She wrapped her arms around herself protectively. “He touches me and not in an innocent way either. I’m afraid to say anything. What if he gets angry and does something worse, ya know?”

“I didn’t know it was that bad. Why didn’t you tell me?”

“It’s not a big deal. I just try to ignore him.”

“Fuck that. He touches you again, you let me know. I’m serious!”

“Thanks Elena,” Cathy said with a weak smile, reaching for her hand. “You really are my best friend.
